2023년 유럽 최대 항공사 허브는? 정답은 터키이다.

터키의 이스탄불 허브가 얼마나 커졌는지를 더 명확하게 이해하려면 런던 히드로와 비교하여 용량을 살펴보면 된다 . Diio by Cirium 의 일정 데이터에 따르면 터키는 올해 5월까지 12개월 동안 이스탄불을 오가는 35m 이상의 좌석을 제공했다. 현재 유럽에서 두 번째로 분주한 런던 히드로 공항의 경우 그 수는 21m 미만이며 이는 엄청난 격차를 나타낸다.

터키항공 이스탄불 허브도 오늘날 코로나19 이전보다 더 커졌다. 

대부분의 대형 유럽 항공사 허브가 아직 코로나 이전 규모를 회복하지 못한 상황에서 이는 이례적인 일이다. 터키항공과 경쟁하는 페가수스 항공도 이스탄불 허브를 키웠지만 도시의 두 번째 공항에 있다. Covid 위기 이후 성장한 다른 허브에는 London Gatwick의 easyJet , Dublin의 Ryanair , Milan Bergamo의 Ryanair 및 Madrid의 Air Europa이 있다. 

놀랍게도 4년 전 비교하면 규모가  커진 Aegean Airlines와 Air France/KLM 자회사인 Transavia는 위기 이후 아테네와 파리 오를리에서 각각 수용 능력을 약 두 배로 늘렸다. 

지난 12개월 동안 주요 유럽 허브의 용량은 어떻게 수행되었을까? 작년에 비해 거의 모든 허브가 성장했다. 

그러나 두 항공사는 예외적이다. 우크라이나 분쟁으로 인해 모스크바 셰레메티예보에 있는 Aeroflot과 제2 이스탄불 공항에 있는 터키항공은 마이너스 성장을 했다.

아래 차트에서 주의깊게 볼 마지막 사항은 유럽 항공에서 10위 내 위치에 있는 루프투한자가 프랑크푸르트 및 뮌헨 허브에서 2019년부터 4년 전보다 작아졌다는 부분이다. 자매 항공사인 스위스 항공은 취리히 공항에서, 핀에어는 헬싱키 공항에서 4년 동안 마찬가지로 그 규모가 20% 넘게  줄었다.

What is the largest airline hub in Europe in 2023?

The answer is Turkey.

To get a clearer idea of just how big the Turkish Airlines Istanbul hub has become, let us take a look at its capacity compared to London Heathrow. Schedule data from Diio by Cirium show that Turkish has offered more than 35m seats to and from Istanbul during the 12 months through May of this year. For London Heathrow, now Europe’s second busiest airport, the number is less than 21m. That’s a huge gap.

The Turkish Airlines Istanbul hub is also larger today than it was pre-Covid. That’s unusual, with most large European airline hubs still yet to recover their pre-Covid size.

Pegasus Airlines, which competes with Turkish, has also grown its Istanbul hub, but at the city’s secondary airport. Other hubs or “bases” that have grown since the Covid crisis include easyJet at London Gatwick, Ryanair at Dublin, Ryanair at Milan Bergamo, and Air Europa at Madrid.

Remarkably, Aegean Airlines and Air France/KLM subsidiary Transavia have roughly doubled their capacity since the crisis, at Athens and Paris Orly, respectively. That’s compared to four years ago.

How has capacity at key European hubs performed in the last twelve months?

Compared to last year, nearly all hubs have grown. Two exceptions are Aeroflot at Moscow Sheremetyevo, due to the Ukraine conflict, and Turkish Airlines at the secondary Istanbul airport.

One final point to highlight from the chart below. Notice how much smaller Lufthansa’s Frankfurt and Munich hubs are today than four years ago. Its sister airline Swiss is similarly much smaller at Zurich airport.
